Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant give us yet another romantic comedy called Music and Lyrics. Hugh plays Alex Fletcher, an 80's pop star who seems content scrapping by on his former glory perfoming anywhere he can get booked (mainly fairs and parks). Drew plays Sophie Fisher, a slightly neurotic quirky character who has very little social grace so her foot ends up in her mouth often. Alex gets the chance to come back from musical obscurity and wants it. All he has to do is write a new duet for the current "flavor of the moment" teen pop star, Cora Corman. The problem is he has about 3 days to do this and he's a horrible writer. During the song writing process, Sophie's off watering the plants and can't help chiming in. Before she knows it, she's part of the process.
Throughtout the movie you get all the staples of a romantic comedy. Funny and flawed characters, the first meet, the attraction build up, the inevitable fight, realization of feelings, the over-the-top win back gesture and a happy ending. It's a simple, silly, feel good movie. Drew and Hugh are known for these types of roles and are quite successful at them. Drew is slightly odd and always lovable. Even when she's confronting an issue from the past, you can't help but laugh at her reaction. And no one does light-hearted, witty sarcasm better than Hugh. Plus, they work well with each other.
You do end up laughing all through the movie. How can you not when you see Hugh in the Wham! 80's imitation band called Pop! ? The movie is silly and yes, predictable. It's definitely not the best movie out there. However, if you're looking to laugh and be entertained without expecting much, then this movie delivers. Sometimes you need silliness, you know? It made me laugh. I was entertained for that hour and a half. Mission accomplished.
Last night I was channel surfing trying to find a good movie to watch. That's when I saw The Exorcism Of Emily Rose was on. Freaky movie for sure. I made a point of watching it during the daytime so it wouldn't completely freak me out the first time I ever saw it. It's still freaky, but after that first viewing, it's all good.
I looked it up on the guide and saw it was being shown like 4 different times. Yes, east and west channels so it was basically playing every 3 hours and on 2 different networks. Then I thought it was interesting this movie was being shown now....we're in Lent.
Over playing a movie about devil possession during Lent. Funny :)
Yesterday afternoon I went to an activity sponsored by my former high school. It was Family Day at Baldwin School. I do remember the Family Day's we went to while in elementary. The games, the food, running around like crazy with your friends. Well, not much has changed in that aspect.
It has gotten more elaborate. This year's theme was Pirates Of The Caribbean. Parents, children, teachers...there were many people dressed up as pirates or had pirate shirts on. There were kiosks where people sold art prints, you could get a free massage (which btw, that place was always full and I never saw those 2 massagers take breaks), win a fish at a game and take a picture with the Nestle bunny among other things. There were raffles going on through out the day. Everything from gift certificates of different stores to a LCD tv. The funniest one had to have been the gift certificates for Botox :) The biggest difference was the fact that they had a band play for about an hour and half. It was Black: Guayaba. Interesting.
So I spent my time walking around and talking to some of my teachers. To me they don't look any different than when I was in high school. I looked at the kids and teenagers running and walking around and I came to a conclusion. Nothing's changed. The school might get better buildings and improvements and some kids might come from more well-to-do families, but everyone still looks the same. And that made me laugh.
Yet another crazy chicken moment...
This afternoon I'm in the kitchen and I hear rustling in the terrace. I look out the door and see the chicken breaking up this plastic table cloth that was left over from one of the parties. But she was sitting on one of the chairs and it all looked a mess. I tapped on the glass and she turned around, she stopped and stared at me.
So I go to my room and my parents get home around 4:30pm. My mother goes outside and sees the chicken all tangled up. She had gotten one of her legs trapped in her own mess. Amazingly enough, the chicken allowed herself to be picked up. That's when my mother notices the blood on the floor and on the chicken. I was about to eat, but she calls me outside to see the chicken and ask me what happened. I don't know what happened, I was in my room most of the day.
The blood was dry and the chicken seemed fine. But as my mother held her, I cleaned her up. I wanted to see if she was cut anywhere else, so it took a while to clean. She even had a bit of dry blood in her eye which was preventing her from opening it all the way. After a while, she was all clean and on her way. We just assume the rooster pecked at her while she was tangled. I don't know.
After almost 2 months of not going to Pink Skirt, I went last night with some friends. It's a strange and funny experience being there and not having anything to drink aside from water. First of all, the expression of my normal face tends to make people think I'm pissed off. I just have one of those serious looking faces, but I'm not angry or upset. Because of that, I tend to get a lot of "what's wrong?" when nothing's wrong. Always been that way and last night was no exception. Friends thought there was something wrong...and I even got asked by some drunk girl if everything was ok. Of course 2 seconds later she almost fell on me :)
I was just chilling, talking to people, enjoying the music and watching all these Emo kids spaz out on the dance floor. The music was really good last night, but I was more entranced by the Emo kids hairstyles. How do they do that?!
Anyway, I wasn't planning on staying all night either, but we ended up staying until it closed. So last night I was sporting my Little Miss Trouble t-shirt. It's funny, people laugh, it's all good. Then you have the one drunk guy who's spilt half his drink on his shirt come up to you and say "So how much trouble are you?" *Wink, wink* Wow...that's sooooo original...O-m-g, I have to stop and talk to you, NOT. Ignore and walk away.
The music was really good though...I said that already huh? Well it was.
Being sick this weekend did give me a chance to catch up on a few movies.
1. Fifty Pills - Darren's a college student who gets in trouble thanks to his roommate Coleman, and is in danger of not being able to return next semester since his scholarship was canceled. So in an attempt to raise tuition money, Coleman gives Darren 50 ecstasy pills and he has a day to sell them all. He runs into plenty of characters during the day. From a dominatrix to a Korean drug dealer. The movie is kind of funny.
2. Mem-o-re - I thought the idea behind this movie was interesting. Memories are stored and passed down through our genes. So when Taylor gets exposed to a strange substance used in some Native Indian ritual, he starts experiencing the memories of some serial killer from before he was born. It becomes this mystery he tries to solve. Interesting idea and the movie has good actors, but it's sort of slow going and it ends predictably. It was ok, but it had potential to be better.
3. Miss Potter - Lovely movie with Rene Zellweger. She plays Beatrix the writer of the children's books we've all read. She's an unconventional woman for her time prefering independence over settling for a life not of her own doing. She believes she's never marry, but when he meets and spends time with Norman, her feelings change. She's a successful, independent children's book author who does what she feels is right for her which in turn sometimes goes against what her parents desire for her. Even so, she does what she thinks is right.
4. Ils - This is a french film based on true events. Clementine and Lucas live in this huge house on lots of land. One night Clementine wakes up to find they're not alone in the house. And so begins their night of terror. Not knowing who or what is after them, they hide, run and try to get away. I think the end is probably the scariest part of all just knowing something like this happened.
5. Freedom Writers - I enjoyed watching this movie. The story is great and interesting. Even though the movie is good, you know this type of movie will always be compared to Dangerous Minds....teacher doing everything in her power to engage and save her students.
6. The Messengers - Don't watch this movie. It has good actors in it, but it's dumb and boring. From the previews you think one thing is going to happen, when it's not like that at all.
So I didn't do anything this weekend. I wasn't feeling all that well at the end of last week and I was full blown sick by friday night. Even though I took medicine, I still couldn't sleep friday night. I tossed and turned till almost 6am. I was so stuffed up , the pressure was making my teeth hurt. It was like my head was imploding on me.
Not sure why I'm getting sick so much. This is my 4th flu/cold in a span of 4 months. Anyone would think I don't take care of myself. I don't smoke, drink or do drugs. I take vitamins, exercise everyday and eat fairly well. I don't get it. But today I'm feeling somewhat better. Still can't breathe and I feel like I need to sneeze, but never do. Hate that.
Here's my admition for the day:
I have started watching All My Children. I've abandoned the CBS soaps and am now watching ABC. Not that I was watching soaps, but I grew up watching all the CBS shows. Young & The Restles, Guiding Light, As The World Turns, The Bold & The Beautiful...we watched them all in my house thanks to my mother. Even in college I was still keeping up with them. But for years now I haven't been watching them, except for As The World Turns. I have a feeling I'll be watching that till the day I die.
How did I jump over from all that to All My Children? It just sort of happened this past week. My tv 90% of the time is off. I think it was on wednesday, I turned it on looking for the time on a show and I saw The View was on. So I left it on there, laughed with Rosie and the gang and next thing I know, All My Children had started. And I just started watching it. It's just like all the other soaps of course, but I found it hilarious. Also, finally seeing Susan Lucci and remembering back to all those times she would get nominated and never won just made me laugh even more.
So, that's how I've come to watch All My Children. Will I continue to watch? As long as I find it hilarious and ridiculous, sure :)
Can this chicken get any crazier? That is the question at hand.
This afternoon I'm in my room when I hear the chicken cackle like a mad bird. Turns out that my sister was leaving the house and it scared her. It reminded me of a couple of weeks ago when my mother was cleaning the front of the house. The chicken came out of nowhere, got spooked, took flight and glided over my frightened mother landing elsewhere in the front yard.
Well, if scaring the chicken once today wasn't enough, then she definitely had her fill later on. This time I'm in the kitchen just finishing up my dinner. Next thing I hear, "CACKLE! CACKLE! CACKLE! CACKLE! AHHHHHH! CACKLE! CACKLE!". All I thought was, "WTF is going on out there?" That's when my sister walked into the house all adrenalized. :) She said she was walking up to the door and didn't see the chicken right away. Apparently crazy bird was sitting on a plant pot near the door and got spooked when she saw my sister. This chicken has gone nuts and off she went straight up.........TO THE ROOF TOP!
I thought, "Omg, there's a chicken on the roof...You don't see that everyday." This is a two story house...Who say chickens can't fly, huh? :)
Early this afternoon my father decided to remove the eggs the chicken had laid a while ago. Wow. Just walking by the front door made anyone want to puke. I don't know if you've ever seen, been around or smelled a rotten egg. It's incredibly gross. The smell stays with you all day. It seeps into your clothes, your nose and makes you feel all sick. I stayed away from all that, but still smelled it going to the kitchen. Gross.
I went over to my brother's house to watch the Super Bowl with some other folks. The game was good and entertaining. I wasn't rooting for any one team, so I just enjoyed the game. We didn't really get to see the commercials because the cable company blocks them out with local commercials. This is a standard practice so I don't even get my hopes up about seeing the Super Bowl ads.
The funniest part of the entire night though came at the expense of a guest. She will remain nameless, but c'mon. When you pass out 10min into the game, you're bound the have pictures taken. Haha!
Right as I was going to get ready to exercise, Ivan calls me up and asks if I want to go to the Tiesto party. I wasn't planning on going, but sure...why not. We get to the Hiram Bithorn and it looks pretty packed. We got there just as Tiesto was starting his set. So we make our way through the crowd until we can't get any closer. Well, we probably could've, but we were cool where we stopped. One thing I'll never understand is why in the world would girls go to these types of parties wearing 5inch heels. Why? Who are you trying to impress? The sweaty tattooed-body modified dude on X?!
Anyway. Tiesto did his thing, it was alright and the night was fun. Not bad for a last minute plan.
Last night Baldwin had their first alumni association event of the year. It was a dinner and drinks thing at the school cafeteria. Since I'd gone to the holiday party, I wasn't planning on attending. Yajaira however, wanted to go and took me along. I saw the same people who went to the holiday party, minus all the kiddies. The yearbooks were all spread out on a table along with scrapbooks. Yeah, I found my siblings's in lots of pictures. It was funny to see. Afterwards, we stopped by a bar to see Carl and even ran into more Baldwin people there.
Last night turned out to be quite a night. It seemed like just another night with nothing special going on. I ate dinner and was waiting for Yajaira. While I waited, I gave Lasha (one of our dogs) her eye drops. This needs a little backstory...
Lasha's an old pomeranian. She's about 14 years old and yes, she has developed a few medical problems. It goes with the territory of getting old. List of ailments are as follow:
So the last one is what the drops were for. Everyday it's been drops here, drops there...the never ending drops. This obviously irritates her and with one eye closed most of the time, she'd been bumping into everything even more. Poor thing. So, back to last night. I gave her the drops and she didn't like that. She tried to scratch her eye and ended up poking her eye with her small nail. Next thing I know there's too much fluid from the eye and blood. The drops had made her secrete all this crap which I guess meant her eye was getting better, but now with blood...Well, we called the vet, took her in and off she went to surgery. Lasha had managed to scratch the ulcer in her eye and that's why it bled. So they gassed her up and sewed her eye shut. I think she's supposed to be this way for 10 days to 14 days. Now she's coned up and restricted in her area, but last night she woke up about every 2 hours and tried to scratch her eye. A scratched cornea is painful dude. She'd wake up, I'd wake up. I didn't sleep. I'm completely sleepy today. It's going to be an "interesting" week.
